Being Thrown in the Deep End

“Success can be measured not only in achievements, but in lessons learned.” (Nishan Panwar)

After never using an Interactive whiteboard or the software used by Promethean (ActivInspire) and doing my first year 8 mathematics lesson yesterday and having to use one, it was a little daunting and even my mentor apologies for throwing me in the deep end.

I have come to realise in such a short period of time that technology has both its pros and cons and whether you decide it has to many cons to be a successful device is completely up to you. But it wasn’t until I have a few issues (such as the pen only works when you press on the board with a certain pressure, if you upload a powerpoint through the ActivInspire software you cannot write on it) with the interactive whiteboard yesterday that i realised this.

And I know that while many students enjoy the interaction, learning with technology, the open accessibility they have to educational games on a large scale and that it is easy to use and adapt for special needs students, they do lose there motivational element on students after some time.

Teachers can also benefit from them as they are able to clearly demonstrate or explain something, such as if information is already on the screen, the teacher can just add to it instead of wasting time writing down stuff students probably won’t want to copy down anyways, its already there on the screen. Interactive whiteboards also accommodate for most learning styles and are suitable for all ages and are reasonably easy to adapt to and use.

Cons of the interactive whiteboard include:

  • Interactive Whiteboards tend to be PC friendly not MAC friendly
  • Problems with too many wires in the classroom
  • Students interfering with and being attracted to playing with visible wires
  • Clutters the classroom
  • Takes a lot of time to pack away when needed

Happy blogging and I hope prac flies by

Candace :)
